Early morning rain with the One who reigns…

Rain drops, loud claps and flashes of light woke me in the still of near morning today. God was putting on a bit of a light show.

In the darkness of a sleeping house, my wide-eyed wonder beheld His glory, His power, His eternal I Am strength. And from the book of Job, chapter 37, I read:

Whenever this happens, my heart stops—I’m stunned, I can’t catch my breath. Listen to it! Listen to his thunder,  the rolling, rumbling thunder of his voice. He lets loose his lightnings from horizon to horizon, lighting up the earth from pole to pole. In their wake, the thunder echoes his voice,   powerful and majestic. He lets out all the stops, he holds nothing back. No one can mistake that voice— His word thundering so wondrously, his mighty acts staggering our understanding. And yes, it’s God who fills clouds with rainwater and hurls lightning from them every which way. He puts them through their paces—first this way, then that—commands them to do what he says all over the world. Whether for discipline or grace or extravagant love, he makes sure they make their mark. As gold comes from the northern mountains, so a terrible beauty streams from God.

And the psalmist declares:

I, too, give witness to the greatness of God, our Lord, high above all other gods. He does just as he pleases—however, wherever, whenever. He makes the weather—clouds and thunder, lightning and rain, wind pouring out of the north.  {135:5-7}

Clouds belched buckets of rain, Sky exploded with thunder, your arrows flashing this way and that. From Whirlwind came your thundering voice, Lightning exposed the world, Earth reeled and rocked. {77:18-19}

And Jesus said:

You know how the whole sky lights up from a single flash of lightning? That’s how it will be on the Day of the Son of Man. But first it’s necessary that he suffer many things and be turned down by the people of today. Luke:24-25

As lightning lights up the whole sky, Jesus is our Light, lighting up our whole life, if we let Him.

His Light fills the darkness. His Light changing my darkness.

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:4-6

But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.  1 John 1:7

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life. John 8:11-13

And He calls me to stay the course with just enough Light for each step of the way. His fingerprint upon it all, dusk to dawn. Speaking to me without ceasing. If I have ears open, I hear. Faith comes by hearing.

Oh Lord, let my faith grow ever stronger, burning more brightly, lighting the way for others with your Light…

Slipping back between the sheets, birds beginning their morning songs, my Michael holds me and I hold this moment close to sleepy heart.

Love, amazing and divine, covers us both, sweet slumber embracing…

  1. Beautiful, Sheila. You’re making me wish for rain now. 🙂 We are supposed to get thunderstorms this morning, so bring them on, Lord, and remind me of your power. Love this truth: “just enough Light for each step of the way.” Yes.

  2. So beautiful. I love the verses on thunder! God’s mighty power and voice! I used to tell my son when he was 2 that the lightning was God taking our picture. So then during a storm he would run to the window, smile, look to the sky and say, “Cheese!”
