February 14 is the lovers’ holiday and couples everywhere will be celebrating.
But you’re all alone.
Maybe you’re single or divorced or recovering from a broken relationship. You might even be someone’s Mrs. but your marriage is not a good one and you are feeling abandoned or hurt.
Seeing all the red hearts and lace and chocolates and happy couples kissing in diamond ring commercials twists your heart hard.
And you’re longing for a love that will make your pain and emptiness go away.
While my Michael has a surprise in store for us tomorrow that I am anticipating, there were Valentine’s Days not so long ago when my heart ached and I thought I would always be alone.
Bits and pieces of marriages, relationships and hearts all broken make up a dark mosaic in memory with past loneliness and pain faded but remembering wee hours in a house as cold as my soul and its settling and creaking sounding like my heart moaning and weeping.
And the ache ran so deep and so wide that I thought despair and desolation would forever be my bedfellows. I doubted I would smile again let alone know a love true and pure.
The more I searched, the less I sought first the kingdom.
But God knows our end from our beginning and waits for us when we may wander. He appoints and allows seasons of suffering which shape our character and make us stronger. These are not fun, but must be endured. And He heals our hearts as we surrender all to Him and slowly we pass from dark to light and life begins to shine again.
So if you are alone or feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day, I am sorry, but please let me encourage you to give your heart to the One who loves you like crazy and will be with you on February 14 and all the days and nights to come, and even those before.
He will never leave you and His holiness will love you whole.
Back in my dark days surrender was hard, but as I did His most precious word soothed my soul and healed my hurts. It will do the same for you, my friend.
You are never truly alone when you deeply know God loves you.
And He has written you and me a love letter that when embraced and taken to heart in faith will fill you up and give you hope.
Timeless and true, this Valentine’s just for you…
I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving kindness. I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt…they will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble…They will be like a well-watered garden and they will sorrow no more…Then maidens will dance and be glad…I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded, declares the LORD. Jeremiah 31:3-16
How beautiful you are, my darling, you! Oh, how beautiful! Song of Solomon 1:15
The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me. Song of Solomon 2:11-13
No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate…for the LORD will take delight in you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:4-5
In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed you; he lifted you up and carried you all the days of old. Isaiah 63:9
The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace we have been saved. Ephesians 2:4
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. John 15:9
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20
Let the truth of the word set you free and never forget that you are His…
