When daddy isn’t there, Father always is…

A woman learns about men from the first man in her life.

And for those of us who did not have a Father Knows Best kind of dad, that can spell trouble later on.

It did for me, leaving a hole in my heart that I sought to fill in a vain attempt to be whole.

And men can struggle just as much from not having the love and attention of an emotionally healthy father, but it may present itself differently than it does for daddy’s little girls.

For those of us who arrived wrapped in pink and wearing the blush of Heaven on our dewy little cheeks, we sometimes try to fill the missing daddy-love part of our heart by looking for love in all the wrong places.

Trading purity and patience for wisdom and waiting, we rush in where fools fear to tread.

And the consequences are always disastrous.

Yet it can take a while to know better.

Maybe you, like me, needed to go round the block a few times, falling from your bicycle and scraping your knee {heart} badly before realizing that True Love had been there all along.

And it doesn’t matter if dad drank too much, or hit your mom; or if he worked long hours and weekends and you rarely saw him; or if he yelled ugly words at you, or perpetrated heinous acts that ripped your soul apart.

However our hearts got broken to begin with, the end result is always the same.

We hurt.

We cry.

We fear.

We get angry.

Furious angry.

We hide.

We flaunt.

And maybe we taunt.

We try to be perfect.

Or we eat too much.

We shop too much.

We hurt ourselves in various ways.

We have a string of broken relationships or marriages in our wake, with all the complicated collateral damage that causes.

And our pain will not heal, nor will we be truly free, until we offer and seek forgiveness, surrendering all to Him. Leaving our mess at the foot of the Cross, letting Him put the pieces of our lives together in the wonderful way that only God can.

And it ain’t easy. Nor is there a quick fix.

But our Elder Brother knows all about suffering and He will help us through it.

He’ll help us up when we fall down. He’ll hold us tight when chill winds blow on long, lonely nights. He’ll dry our tears and capture them in a bottle which I like to think we’ll wear like perfume someday in Heaven.

He bore all our pain, shame and guilt on the Cross, offering His life to take away our sins. Giving His all so that we could have it all. Opening a door that leads to eternal life, with healing here on earth amidst the squalor and confusion.

And He’s holding out His hand and His heart to you and to me every moment of every day. Waiting…

Take a moment and read His love letter below. Let His Word sink deep into the hurting places and let it put the broken pieces of your heart back together in a brand new way.

How happy He would be if you would open your heart and let Him into your crazy, busy, pain filled, or everything-looks-great-on-the-surface, life.

He’s got the whole world in His hands and yet He knows us each by name.

And He knows how and why we hurt the way we do.

He knows the troubles we’ve seen and the pain we think we can’t ever heal from.

In allowing that blackness to touch our lives, He has used it as a means of drawing us to Himself. Of making us more like Jesus. Of shaping and strengthening us so we could one day go forward and comfort others, proclaiming freedom to captives and helping to bind up their wounds.

He will take away our despair and give us hope, if we will give Him our heart.

And everlasting joy will be ours…
