Be ye holy…

Recently at breakfast, Dearest Husband read aloud from 1 Peter, verses 13 through 25.

During the morning, I prayed and pondered, looking up other translations. Words from The Message bible jumped off the page.

As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God’s life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness.
1 Peter 1:15

Blazing with holiness…

The world screams: Whatever feels good, do it!

But His word says:

Don’t lazily slip back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like doing. You didn’t know any better then; you do now.
1 Peter 1:14

God wants something more, something better.  He wants us to be all shiny bright, full of Him, so that our lives can light a path that others may seek to follow.

God is Holy in all His ways and we are to be like Him.

…but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:15-16

In all our behavior! Our words, thoughts and deeds.  Ouch.  Even when no one is looking, because He always is.

Setting a guard on our tongues and taking captive every wayward thought. Longing to be good.  To please and honor Daddy. Yet sometimes failing.

We keep seeking Him, seeking Holiness.

And He speaks to us every day, if our hearts are soft and open, with gentle reminders to do His will.

On a drizzly drive to work, a hill to the west wore a wispy shawl of mist wrapped round its shoulders.  And I remembered…

Exalt the LORD our God.
And worship at His holy mountain;
For the LORD our God is holy.
Psalm 99:9

For the LORD our God is holy.

And we are to be also.  One day at a time.  Stumbling and getting back up.  Working out our sanctification in fear and trembling.  Taking off our shoes for we are standing on holy ground.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:5-10

Ousting the bad — ONLY by God’s grace for we cannot change ourselves — and letting goodness in…

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Colossians 3:12-14

As you pursue holiness, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, dear friends, and I will too…
